Can a Registered Sex Offender Preach?

Can a registered sex offender preach? Well, there are Catholic Priests doing it, and how long did Eddie Long sit down? The New Black Panther party is chanting, marching and protesting at Christ Tabernacle Church for Darrell Gilyard  in Jacksonville, Florida to be excommunicated as a presiding pastor.

I’m not a New Black Panther Party member, and to be honest, I’m not even all-the-way committed to any political party. I could be deaf, dumb, and blind, and know that a registered sex offender should not be preaching on the pulpit. It is against the word of God, and isn’t he there to teach the very thing that he is violating.

In Leviticus 18 a book in the old testament that talks specifically about sexual morality and holiness, as believers we understand that child sexual abuse is intolerable; the punishment exile. The bible says that you should be cut off.

Child Sexual Abuse, Rape with underage minors, Rape violently in a park, or any kind of sexually deviant act is not like getting a parking ticket. National statistics show that predators recommit within fifteen years. In other words, they are hunters, and do not have to do anything for long periods of time, seemingly recovered and in remission.

Church Responsibility

The dangers in this situation are obvious. And what an inconvenience to a church that is suppose to offer spiritual responsibility over his flock. How is it possible that he will be the shepherd of children that he is not able to ever see?

While at first glance he appears to not have broken laws, he is actually doing so because he is the spiritual head of those children. In order for the youth department to have special events, or to attend a church banquet, concert or anything else, people will have to raise their children outside of the church and have no “spiritual father” or “shepherd”. I remember as a young child needing to have my pastor answer questions, about angels and other spiritually related thoughts.

The bible is clear when it states that you should raise your child in the way that he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. How can you raise your child in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, if you have to explain to them that you attend a church where the Pastor could potentially harm them?

Mandated Reporters

Lastly, the law protects clergymen from disclosing any information about perpetrators or any other sin that someone has committed because it is a part of the pastor’s responsibility to obey the religious or scriptural context for handling situations. The law allows for that difference. If you have a pastor in the pulpit who is a sexual offender, and is not a mandated reporter, it is extremely dangerous for local church body, and citizens alike.

In very rare cases, (I know of a few), where someone is convicted of sexual assault, child sexual abuse, or sexual misconduct with a child, and the statements are false. The person gets scared and negotiates a plea deal because of the way that the case is handled in the court system.

I would love the opportunity to talk about this story on the news providing additional information to enlighten church members of the dangers set forth here.

UPDATE: I was contacted this morning because Alex Hill, a reporter with CBS 47/ FOX 30 Action News, read my blog, and wanted to interview me for tonight’s segment. I couldn’t make it to Jacksonville, Florida today in order to be interviewed and accept the invitation but this is fantastic news. Feel free to forward this blog and share it with others. And, if Darrell Gilyard or other situations about child sexual abuse, rape, incest, and predators, make National Headlines, I would love to be interviewed by local television stations in person, satellite stations, or telephone interviews.

Thank you,
