Politics And Military Rape: How Women’s Rights Are In Jeorpardy And The Laws That Approve Sexual Assault

“It is hard, but healing is possible. However, I would not have to heal if i were never touched.” – Ressurrection Graves

They say that your vote counts. You have the opportunity to affect tomorrow with your decision when you vote, and although it seems like there are never any good candidates, we do have to look at the issues that are a priority for our lives, and choose wisely. As a woman, I have noticed that the number of bills which are being proposed against women are reverse integration and uncomfortable at best.

Abortion

In Virginia, there is an argument in the commonwealth about whether the new abortion laws are permitting women to be sexually assaulted by physicians. Rape is a non consensual penetration in a woman’s vagina (in this case). The bill, which Representative Bob McDowell of Virginia has communicated that he will sign, requires Transvaginal Ultrasounds also called, “Sonograms” for women who are seeking abortions.

There is no medical reason for this, only that anti-abortionists, have decided that they want for a woman to hear the sound of her child’s heartbeat before choosing to abort the child. They believe this may change the woman’s mind.

As a woman who has never had an abortion however, has had many emotionally traumatic Papsmears, and women’s exams, I believe that this is another opportunity to take away the rights of women. I used to cry at every papsmear when I was younger. Young women and women of any age, especially the one in four women who have experienced child sexual abuse, or sexual violence, would agree that requiring women to be fingered with an instrument or a medical physician’s hand is always uncomfortable.

Sometimes you have to talk yourself through the procedure, and other times the doctor will have to repeatedly tell you to relax yourself. Going to the doctor and being probed in your vagina, is never something that should become law as it is a violation of women’s rights, and an unnecessary step in a women’s choice to keep or abort their child.

I would even say that a woman would rather go to the dentist and get a root canal, but even that analogy lacks the level of trauma that a woman, any woman could experience during a well women’s visit. It is also important to note, that women who are pregnant as a result of rape, or a violent relationship could experience more trauma. They have already had their rights violated whether it was a stranger or domestic partner who have abused them.

Many women who have to abort their children may do so because they were advised by their doctor who, have determined that the child would be unable to live a normal life. And, they have the right to choose what is right for their family. In many cases, the husband is also a part of this difficult decision.

To add injury to injury, you want to tell a woman, “Here, listen to your child’s heartbeat, and watch them on the ultrasound screen! Are you sure you want to have an abortion?” These laws are archaic! In the bible it says that we have authority over the fowls of the air, the fish of the sea, and other things, but nowhere in there does it state that we can control humans. Even in referencing our relationship with God it says in the text that we have the choice to live for God. And, like all choices, we understand that those choices could bear consequences however the decision to abort an unborn child is between a person and their maker – unless you are going to call it murder, in which case, you would also have to lock yourselves up for voting for and creating a law that would endorse the sexual assault of women.

Transvestites

In an unprecedented move, the Federal government is allowing transgendered people to choose which bathroom they want to use. They will not be questioned or stopped. This is an infringement upon woman’s rights, as it primarily affects the safety of women and makes them vulnerable to sexual assault by perpetrators who pretend to be transgendered. As you will read in my article on the subject, there is a sexual predator (of children) who recently became transgendered. Passing this law too, infringed upon the rights of women – especially since these transgendered women were born as a male.

Sexual Assault Bill Against Certain Women

And then, there is the Violence Against Women’s Act of 1994. A reform of the bill emerged which encouraged the services and programs under the act to include all women; illegal immigrants and citizens alike. Republicans wanted to cut the funding altogether in 2000, and to disallow a woman to sue her attacker in federal court. Conservative Republicans were also against battered illegal immigrant women permitted to have a temporary visa and to receive services. In the provision of 2012, conservative republicans also disagreed with women who are in same-sex relationships to have access to the $1.6 billion funding. Phyllis Schlafly denounced VAWA as a tool to “fill feminist coffers” and argued that the Act promoted “divorce, breakup of marriage and hatred of men”.

In my opinion, if we do not help a woman who has been sexually assaulted either in a domestic violence or brutal attack situation, her family could disassemble because of the affects of the abuse on her life – internally. A woman is not going to run back to her country or choose an attack to become legal (this would be rare because her partner could be jailed), these are separate issues. She will keep going, and without the tools necessary to heal it will affect us all.

Military Rape

Governor Deval Patrick has put the Head of the Massachusetts National Guard on leave. There is no statute of limitations in the military according to the Military Rape Crisis Center website. Joseph C. Carter is accused of a brutal sexual assault which left his co-worker and fellow military coast guard police officer laying on the beach, paralyzed and waiting to be discovered.

The victim Susan Pelletier came forward after she was dishonorably discharged following her denial of request to be moved to another unit, and ultimate AWOL – absence without leave. She was surprised to receive a phone call from those investigating the matter further.

The assault was swept under the rug until now, when Joseph C Carter is under consideration for a two-star general position. He makes a handsome $174,214 per year by the state, and federal compensation he oversees nearly 9,000 members of the National Guard. His distinguished career included being the chief of MBTA Transit police and the police chief in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says of the new Pentagon report on sexual abuse in the Military that since 2006 there has been a 64% increase in violent assaults. And, Fox News Liz Trotta said on February 12, that “Women in the military should expect to be raped.” There is a petition requesting the network to hold her accountable for her inflammatory comments.

Rep. Gwen Moore recounting her own child sexual molestation, and sexual assault as a teenager during a hearing on the Violence Against Women’s Act with Congress!

Military Specialist, Kesha Conner has been detained, serving thirty days of solitary confinement in a jail located in Kuwait. She was charged with offenses that she maintains were a strategic effort to sabotage her career, after seeking a fair trial when she was sexually assaulted by a fellow officer. Despite efforts to reach the media it seems that Mitt Romney is a more important topic than military rape and false imprisonment. Todd Akin’s comments received more press than the media’s presentation on military rape, calling to action those who can change the system. There is a petition on Change.org as a call to action for elected officials to step in and release her from prison, and to offer her a fair trial.

Defining Rape

As I mentioned, both Todd Akin who is running for Senator in Missouri, and Liz Trotta with Fox News, have said a mouth full in their comments about women and sexual assault. Trotta concedes that women in the military should expect it, and Akin claims that if you get pregnant when you are raped, you probably were not raped.

The loose lips of people in the media both women and men are damaging. Most people do not even know what an illegitimate rape is, and “No Todd Akin, you do not get to take that back!” To be honest, I’m not sure whether to believe that he actually found doctors who shared this information with him or not but I can say that I have a friend who was the product of rape, and I know at least three other people who have either crossed my path or is an acquaintance who confided that they were born as a result of sexual assault.

I do not understand why men are trying to subtly redefine what rape is. In my book, Identity Crisis, Identity Christ Is: A Journey To Love I describe rape using nature, and the example provided by the classic Bill Cosby sitcom “A Different World” where Dwayne Wayne asks Walter, played by Sinbad about rape. Click Here for video.

Sinbad made it clear that NO, is NO! That is the clarity that everyone should live by. If it is not consensual, it is rape – period. I don’t care what law you make. Rules are made for those who are lawless and unable to make decisions using positive critical thinking skills.

Have you ever seen the aftermath of a Hurricane of Tornado when they have uprooted a stretch of land? This process is called rape. You pull up everything from the root, and it is a “Violent, destructive treatment.” This can be found in my memoir Identity Crisis, Identity Christ Is: A Journey To Love on page 43.

In the book I say this: “I found it interesting that rape speaks of not just violence in a sexually perverted situation but in all instances, stripping something or someone. The act of leaving something or someone empty, void of use.”

Remember, when trees are pulled up from its root, it dies. If you treat the tree, the part of the tree that was damaged and the root quickly then the tree can grow again in its original foundation. Likewise, healing is possible for sexual assault victims. They can recover and be restored in time.

Whether our discussion is of civilian women or women in the military, if you were born a female you have no excuse not to become aware of the attack on your rights. We should not wait until those rights are taken away to reorganize marches and respond with activism, we should take a stand now, while we are standing.

I live by the belief that we should see “it” (as in everything that would be an enemy or threat to our livelihood) coming, and respond with heat. Heat expands and the more that are involved under the tents that we cast, the more that the right-wing-left-wing agendas will realize that no matter what term you are considered, we are still women – with rights.

The Nineteenth Amendment to the United State Constitution was enacted on August 26, 1920 which stated that a woman has the right to vote. We have the right to vote, to speak freely, and to live free from sexual assault, especially from the government.

Be sure to research what some of your politicians who are running for government have to say about sexual assault, child sexual abuse, and the rights of women. Vote Responsibly!
