Did you hear the news? Borders Books is filing for Bankcruptcy. In an article I read, “Among Borders’s biggest missteps were decisions to transfer its Internet operations to Amazon.com Inc. about a decade ago, and a stock-buyback program coupled with overseas expansion that swelled the company’s debt.” That article can be found at: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704329104576138353865644420.html
As an author of a new book, Identity Crisis, Identity Christ Is: A Journey to Love, I can attest to the fact that I don’t have a million dollar marketing campaign. I do not have the resources of a major publisher and to be honest, it works better for me this way. Your responsibility as an author is to market yourself anyway. I might as well Do-It-Myself, and see the rewards of blueprinting my own success.
Border’s made a few huge mistakes in their business that looked good at the time but put them into debt. I encourage you today to look at your company overrall and think about where you want to be in ten years. Are you going to be out-of business if you do not get direction? Well, that is exactly what I am here for. My Business Makeover Takeovers, are designed to set the right foundation, make critical decisions that add revenue and to Resurrect your business!
Now this statement from the article makes me sad!
“I think that there will be a 50% reduction in bricks-and-mortar shelf space for books within five years, and 90% within 10 years,” says Mike Shatzkin, chief executive of Idea Logical Co., a New York consulting firm. “Book stores are going away.”
Bookstores are awesome! But even I understand the times. I will always buy a book so that I can write in it. There is nothing like a collection of your favorite books. Some people want to stare at the computer screen so they buy the digital e-readers like Kindle and Nook. As a business woman, I will absolutely make this service available for readers, however as an avid reader having a book in my hand, talking outloud in response to the text, and writing notes of revelation on the page are patterns that I will most certainly continue to cherish.
Books are too high in the store, and very cheap online. Many places offer free shipping too! I paid $25 for my autographed copy of Russell Simmons. I NEVER lose a book, and do you know that I did indeed lose my book at my nephew’s basketball game a few days after I purchased it.
I went online, looking for information on Russ, and I found the same book for $13! Writers can never stop writing, and I do not believe that books will altogether stop being printed, unless they want a good protest, but as your business grows, you must embrace change and innovation. Borders unfortunately dropped the ball.
